Relief washing over him, Nathan pulled the chair away from his desk then plopped down. He hadn’t even bothered to remove his coat.

“Good news, Landry. I found D.A.S.” Tavia announced. “Dorothy Ann Detrick. Only, at the time of her marriage to Wilbur Stacy, her name was Dorothy Mahoney. She must’ve been married before. Anyway, Mr. Stacy married Dorothy on September 14th, 1943, changing her initials from D.A.M. to D.A.S. Unfortunately, the marriage was annulled by Thanksgiving of that year. I will have to spend some time on this when I get home to find out more about the annulment.”

“Wow. That was over quick. What qualifies a marriage to be annulled?” He pulled several bite-size Snickers from his coat pocket, tossed them on the desk, then started to unwrap one.

She shrugged. “It’s tricky. And I imagine back in the 1940’s it may have been even more so, especially if it was the woman who wanted the annulment. Some prerequisites for annulment could include, duress, as in, one person coerced the other to get married. Maybe fraud, someone lied about something crucial to the marriage, like hiding an infirmity or even impotence. And then there’s always bigamy. Something definitely went wrong for Wilbur and Dorothy and no one knew about it, until now. Do you want me to continue to dig?”

“No. Let’s see what Fiona wants to do. Do you know if Dorothy is still alive?”

“I didn’t get that far. But I’m sure I can find out within minutes, if that’s what Fiona wants.”

Nathan slipped the green velvet pouch from his shirt pocket and extended it toward Tavia. “This is the cameo that started this whole who is D.A.S. in motion.”

Spilling the brooch from the sac, Tavia held the cameo up. “It’s beautiful. I’m glad you got it back.”

“Pfft, so am I. Freddie could’ve destroyed Christmas.”
